Rehabilitation of Commercial Shopfronts and Entrances in the Eastern Market, Old City of Nablus – Phase I

Nablus - In early August 2025, the Old Cities Revitalization Program at Taawon (Welfare Association) launched the implementation of the first phase of the rehabilitation project for commercial shopfronts in the Eastern Market area of the Old City of Nablus. The current phase targets approximately 52 shops, with a total cost of around USD 280,000, funded by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.

Completion of Rehabilitation Works on 12 Damaged Facades and Arches Across the Old City of Nablus

Nablus - Restoration works have so far been completed on 11 building facades across four quarters in the Old City of Nablus, namely Qaryoun, Al-Yasmina, Al-Habala, and Haret Al-Gharb. The project aims to enhance the overall appearance of the area and strengthen structural safety. Restoration of an additional facade is expected to be completed later this month.

Restoration and Rehabilitation of Al-Haddadin Market in the Old City of Nablus

The Old Cities of Jerusalem Rehabilitation Programme has completed the second phase of the restoration and rehabilitation project of Al-Haddadin Souq in the Old City of Nablus. The second phase included the restoration of the facades and entrances of 17 commercial shops, in addition to the installation of shading structures throughout the market.

This phase builds on the first phase of the project, which previously included the restoration and rehabilitation of the facades of 202 commercial shops within Al-Haddadin Souq.

The Darwazeh Complex (Hosh Darwazeh)

A large part of this complex had been destroyed as a result of the main Israeli incursions of 2002 and those ensuing. Five families who had been forced to leave the area at the time were able to return after the WA team completed its rehabilitation intervention in 2010. This was considered an emergency intervention, as the buildings and destroyed part of the complex constituted a hazard to the surrounding inhabitants, which needed an urgent solution.

Reconstruction of Al-Shoubi Residential Complex

A whole residential complex (Hosh), where 18 families lived, was completely destroyed in 2002 during the Israeli invasion of Nablus. The Technical Office implemented a comprehensive reconstruction project including a phase to remove debris & remains and 2 phases for reconstruction of the destroyed parts, provision of new infrastructure and restoration of the remaining historic parts. Project implementation started in 2006 and completion is expected before end 2009. 

Hosh Obaid

Located in al-Qisariyyeh neighborhood (Harah), in the Old City of Nablus, Hosh Obaid or al-Jibali as many residents prefer to name it, is considered one of the poorest and most marginalized communities in the old city.

Rehabilitation of Habaleh project

When we came to the place, it was full of dirt and waste and was causing social and environmental problems to the population in the old town.After preparing all the studies, we decided to work on-site project that serves the local residents and makes the place the center for recreational activities.The landscape is part of our wish to build an attraction for local residents that will increase visitor numbers to the old city.The amphitheater area offers a good place to youth and visitors for playing and social activities.Also is now a place where schools and other groups are able to learn ab

Technical office unit in Nablus

Located at the center of the Old City of Nablus in Salahi Street, the two-storey abandoned and physically deteriorated building was restored and rehabilitated to fit its new function, as the location for the Technical Office for the Restoration Unit and the office of the Local Committee of Nablus Governorate.The work included restoration of the internal spaces, protecting the original geometric colored tiles and replacing the damaged tiles by new ones of traditional design.Most of the wooden work, including screens, mashrabiyyat and original windows, were restored and maintained.
